Thursday November 16th is Beaujolais Nouveau Day here in France. Meyrals celebrated and we joined many locals at our restaurant and bar La Merenda to partake of the new wine and some delicious food.
As France’s most celebrated primeur the wine is produced quickly and is on the shelves just six to eight weeks after the grapes are harvested. The main festival is held in Lyon, where the wine barrels are rolled by the winemakers through the city centre. The wine must be made from the Gamay grape and produced within the Beaujolais AOC and must be harvested by hand. Its light, fruity and has a flavour of strawberries and…….. banana (yes, really).
