Today we decided to revisit Castelnaud-la-Chapelle which is a medieval village just 16km from Gite Le Bois Vert, mainly driving along the beautiful Dordogne river.  Although we are now in mid November, the sunshine makes for a pleasant walk in a sweater or fleece and the scenery here is just wonderful with the autumn tints echoing the mellow yellow and ochre of the stone houses.

Lunch was at Le Tournpique, on the southern side of the bridge at the entrance of the village, and the restaurant was pretty busy with locals and workmen.  With a wonderful menu of perigourdine specials and Basque themed food, there was lots of choice.  The view from the restaurant is not to be missed, with the Dordogne river flowing past, the castle of Castelnaud looming above and in the not too far distance the Chateaux of Beynac and Marquessac can both be seen.

After a delightful and very reasonable lunch a walk around the old streets of the village revealed some delights.  If you don’t feel energetic, there is a road that leads up to the castle.  The village has lots of car parking and many places to eat or have a drink.  At the bottom of the hill on the riverside there is a canoe hire business.
